Plenary speakers
The scientific committee carefully selected four exciting names in arachnid biological research as plenary speakers, paying particular attention to balancing their field of study, geographic origin and gender, but not compromising their scientific excellence:
Jason Bond, Auburn University, USA
Jason, an arachnid systematist, is one of the pioneers of integrative taxonomy, which utilizes complementary datasets for species delimitation from morphology through molecules to geography.
Lecture title: Integrative approaches to delimiting species and taxonomy: lesson learned form highly structured arthropod taxa
Fiona Cross, University of Canterbury, New Zealand
Fiona is investigating the predatory and mate-choice behaviour of a spider from East Africa that feeds indirectly on vertebrate blood, and how this behaviour may be useful for examining questions relating to animal cognition.
Lecture title: Olfaction-based behaviour in a mosquito-eating jumping spider
Eileen Hebets, University of Nebraska, USA
Eileen is an evolutionary behavioral biologist with topics of her research covering general arachnid behavior, sexual selection, sensory system function, and the evolution of signaling.
Lecture title: Interacting traits and secret senses – arachnids as models for studies of behavioral evolution
Fritz Vollrath, University of Oxford, UK
Fritz is the leading expert on biology and evolution of spider silks and webs, which will be the topic of his plenary lecture.
Lecture title: The secrets of silk
We hosted 156 participants from 39 countries, who gave 86 oral and 67 poster presentations.
